Our featured staff member for this month is Andrea Dixon, prenatal yoga teacher extraordinaire! Andrea has been teaching at Blue Point since 2009. In addition, Andrea teaches prenatal yoga Thursdays 5:30-6:45pm at Erwin Rd. and Mondays 4:15-5:15pm at Geer St. She also teaches monthly Prenatal Partner Yoga classes Saturday afternoons at Geer St.
Tell us about your first yoga class (if you can remember!)
I went with my mom to her yoga class. I was 18, definitely the youngest person there. The first regular class I took was for a college PE credit - taught in a huge gym with probably 50 other students. It was possibly the least conducive environment to experience yoga, but I loved it anyways!
What is your favorite pose?
Tree / Vrksasana
What is your favorite thing about Blue Point Yoga?
The lovely students and my inspiring teacher colleagues
If you had to describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
On a good day, inspired! On a not so good day... overwhelmed :)
Besides yoga, what other passions do you have?
Being a mom to my 2 kiddos, pregnancy and childbirth, creating community and living healthy (and very dark chocolate)
Do you volunteer anywhere?
I help out with various things at my kids' schools - EK Powe Elementary and Brogden Middle School. Yay for Durham Public Schools!
Share a fun fact about you:
I met my husband when we were both thru hiking the Appalachian Trail
What is you favorite Durham restaurant?
There are so many good ones! Goccolina, Luna, Bull City Burger and Toast are some of my favorites.
Do you have a favorite recipe? If so, can you provide a link to it?
I am loving this website for recipes these days... www.smittenkitchen.com She has 2 cookbooks that are super fun to read, regardless of if you are cooking that particular recipe.
What book are you currently reading?
Hunger by Roxane Gay, and The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery
Where is your favorite place you've traveled to?
Ghana, West Africa. I studied abroad there in college, and traveled to several other West African countries. The whole experience of being immersed in another part of the world blew me away!
Do you have any hidden talents? (Art, instruments, etc)
Picking perfect avocados and knowing just the right moment to slice them open. And! Hosting big holiday dinners with enough advance planning and delegating that I can still take a hike in the morning :)
How do you like to spend your free time?
Hiking in the woods, reading, cooking (and eating!) good food, and being with my family and friends
If you would like, include a shout out to someone you love! (Significant other, kids or pets) Shout out to my sweet kiddos Miles and Zella, and hubby Banks - who are always encouraging of my yoga love and teaching schedule, despite my embarrassing "stretching in public" habit.
